From a very young age, I always knew I would be an artist one day. I loved drawing, painting, and building things; at least when I wasn’t outside climbing trees, or swimming with my sisters. Some people might say I grew up in a third world country, but South Africa has and always will be my first country. As I grew up, I was constantly surrounded by beautiful landscapes, oceans, ethnics and cultures, so there was never a dull color in my life. Art is truly a survival skill in South Africa. With so many different cultures, there is a never ending supply of art activities, hobbies, and products. Many people in South Africa make a living out of art, thus also mostly referred to as “African Art” in your local World’s Food Market; but don’t let the term fool you. Most of these wonderful beads, rocks, sculptures, and wooden bowls has been a technique developed over many centuries. Naturally, I constantly had the drive to create and when I wasn’t creating, I was glued to the TV, rehearsing my favorite commercial.
At the age of fourteen, my parents decided to move to America, so that they could provide us with a better future. If only someone could have told us how bumpy the road would be to get there. But if there is one thing I have learned from my days in South Africa, it is to never give up trying and to stay true to yourself. If you lose hope in yourself, you’ll loose the will power to create; and if you loose the will power to create, then you have lost yourself completely. The road is still continuing, but along the way I have earned some great opportunities so far in Atlanta, GA. I am now attending Savannah College of Art and Design – Atlanta, where I am studying Broadcast Design and Motion Graphics. I have also been blessed with two internships so far, one at Tube Inc., and my current one at Primal Screen. I also have been working part time at the Apple Store, in Perimeter Mall. I hope to graduate this summer, and make my way out to California or New York, where I want to pursue my dream of film making and becoming a successful fine artist.
Where ever the road might take me, I prefer the one less traveled on. :)
